Sefer Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzah
" And these words ... you shall bind them for a sign on your hands and they shall be frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
- The Shema, Deuteronomy 6:6-9
The parchment scrolls which are used for Sefer Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzzahs must be inscribed with fastidious care and total accuracy by a learned and qualified person known as a"sofer" or scribe. It is an important mitzvah to use only correctly written scrolls and to have them checked periodically for wear and tear.
The Yeshiva Centre hosts a resident scribe, Rabbi Shlomo Israel, who provides this valuable service to synagogues, community organisations and private families. Having studied and trained for many years, Rabbi Israel knows exactly what to look for when examining ritual objects.
Sefer Torah
Rabbi Israel has helped complete the writing of countless new Torah scrolls which have been dedicated in synagogues. Members of the congregation are traditionally invited to participate in this joyous mitzvah under the supervision of the rabbi.
Tefillin
It is important for every Jewish man to have his Tefillin checked regularly to ensure that each part is intact: the straps, the boxes and especially the writing on the parchment scrolls inside these ritual objects. This is crucial when using older or inherited Tefillin.
Mezuzah
Some inexpensively-purchased Mezuzahs are manufactured with cheap or inappropriate materials or inferior workmanship. They may not even be kosher. The scribe will check your Mezuzzahs for flaws or damage and can supply new ones on request. He will also show you, the householder how you can correctly affix your own Mezuzahs at home.
